To love much, not to think much

The measure of prayer — and of life — is not the head: it is love.

“The important thing is not to think much, but to love much; and so, whatever most awakens you to love, do that.”

Saint Teresa of Jesus — The Interior Castle IV, ch. 1

To understand

The measure of everything

How many people get discouraged in prayer because they “cannot concentrate.” Saint Teresa sets them free: prayer is not measured by thoughts, but by love. If the mind wanders, the heart can stay.

And she gives a practical criterion for the whole spiritual life: do whatever most awakens you to love. That is the examination: not how much I know, feel or fulfill — but whether I am loving God more, and those beside me.

The source

The Interior Castle IV, chapter 1

In the fourth dwelling places the Saint begins to speak of what God does in the soul when prayer grows deep. Right there — where others would put technique — she places this simple rule: love more.

Another word of hers

“Whenever we think of Christ, let us remember the love with which He granted us so many favors; for love draws forth love.”

Saint Teresa of Jesus — The Book of Her Life, ch. 22

To pray and to teach

How to bring this teaching into prayer

This is how we use it in the prayer group; it works just as well for praying alone or as a family.

1

Read slowly

Read the text twice, aloud, without hurry. The second time, slower than the first.

2

Keep silence

A moment of silence. Let one word or phrase stay with each person.

3

Talk through the questions

Share unhurriedly and without debate: nothing is argued here — we share what God is showing us.

4

End with a resolution

Each person names one concrete step for the week, and you close with a prayer.

Questions to talk about

  1. With what measure am I measuring my life of faith: thinking, feeling, fulfilling… or loving?
  2. What most awakens me to love? Do I make room for it each week?
  3. Who needs a more concrete love from me this week?

For daily life

Three ways to practice it this week

1

If your mind wanders in prayer, return to the heart: tell God you love Him — and you are already praying.

2

Identify what most awakens you to love — a psalm, a song, serving — and give it a fixed place in your week.

3

Measure the week with her measure: did I love more? — not did I feel more?
